Take Care

Take Care

Over the past couple of weeks, I feel like I’ve talked less about travel and more about self-care. Self-care really is important and I have a routine that I practice otherwise I’d go mad. I took a mental health break over the weekend and it was amazing. I did absolutely nothing. Okay, maybe that wasn’t supposed to be the plan. Remember, doing things that are meaningful is required for a good self-care plan. So let’s just say that I did an hour each day at the gym and meditated for 20 mins. There! Sense of well-being restored! I did get some much-needed rest and sleep and did absolutely no work – which is a wonderful thing! More...

Taking a Mental Health Break, Before My Mental Health Breaks.

Taking a Mental Health Break, Before My Mental Health Breaks.

The first time I ever experienced someone taking a mental health break was a few years ago, when a former co-worker submitted a vacation request. Of course I had heard the term casually thrown here and there, but here it was being used in the context of needing a day off from work. I didn’t know what to think at first – it was a little perplexing – I mean, why not just request a day off from work – if you need a day off from work. The thought of a personal and serious mental health diagnosis may have briefly crossed my mind, but eventually I comfortably settled in to the request being some sort of millennial foolishness and of course, I gave that person the day off. Finding The Best Travel Deals

Finding The Best Travel Deals

I’ve always been a just a little skeptical of “travel deals” on websites like Groupon. Maybe it has something to do with the fine print. You think that you are getting this spectacular deal and you whisk off to Italy to bask in the sun in Capri. However when you get to the bottom of the advertisement and you read the details; your fantasy of sipping fruity cocktails on sandy beaches becomes a dream vacation you probably won’t be taking unless you’re willing to give up a body part. If you’re traveling alone like me (hold the shade please) these type of deals really don’t seem like deals at all.  Of course the price advertised is based on double occupancy which means that the deal is contingent on another person spending an equal amount leaving both individuals splitting the cost of the hotel stay and the expense of a round trip ticket to the departure city. Add in an exorbitant amount to the original price as penance for being single plus more fees and before you know it, your vacation rivals your mortgage payment. So it’s only natural that I have a bit of skepticism when it comes to booking travel deals through discount sites, but I know people who swear by these sites and believe in the deals. I’ve been encouraged to invest in these deals even as a solo traveler.  I don’t personally believe it’s beneficial for me to book a deal through Groupon as the savings wouldn’t be greater than booking through any other site.  I decided to test this out myself. For this comparison we’re going to use a travel deal on Groupon, Travelocity, and Orbitz versus self booking.

Taken

As I continue on this journey to travel,  I’m coming to the realization that having a travel blog means that I actually have to travel – like I have to get up and  leave my house! It’s not an issue or anything;  I go places all the time. My personal objective is to go somewhere at least once a month and I don’t want to get into the habit of not following through. I do have some fun ideas I want to try and share and I definitely want to start the process of getting my passport. More...

2 Jobs are for 2 People

I finally took some time off over the weekend (sort of). I really enjoyed myself and found it quite relaxing. In a previous post, I discussed various reasons that people don’t take vacations. For example, fear that you will come back to work that has piled up while we’re gone. While that may be a legitimate fear, my experience suggests that the pros of taking a vacation and getting proper rest and restoration outweighs any thing that you could think of that would prevent you from taking a proper vacation. I did return to work to find that tasks started by others had been saved for my return. I’ll admit, it is a nuisance and makes me question how supportive co-workers really are. Nonetheless, vacations are so important and I’ll continue to take them despite whatever concerns I have about not taking them. More...

Travel Playlist

Summer is in full swing and it’s time to talk about music. I created a travel playlist because I really wanted to share some tunes with you that are personal to me. This playlist is for all types of travel situations whether it be a road trips, plane rides, or on the beach. I wanted a list with a mix of various genres of music: old school, new school, rap, rock and roll –  a little bit of every type of music. This is overall feel good music. More...

Vacation Pledge

Summer is now in full swing. The heat is sweltering. All of the little kiddies are now out of school getting on your damn nerves and it’s time to figure out your vacation destination. But before you do, make sure that we’re going to be taking a vacation that will incorporate rest, relaxation, and restoration. Whether we’re going to be hitting the beach, pulling out the camper, or taking that dream cruise to the Caribbean; we need to make sure that we are not taking our work with us. So I have developed a vacation pledge to help you follow through with taking a vacation and leaving worries and work behind. More...

Hey Travelers!

Let’s take a moment to get real about my blogging experience thus far. Initially I wasn’t sure how this was going to work out. I work full-time and have a moderately busy schedule already. I have to admit though, I’m really getting into this. I genuinely enjoy writing and blogging has sort of taken me back to my writing roots. More...
